It seems that everyone is rushing around to get things done – running here and running there – never taking time to relax. Did you know that the more time you take to relax and de-stress, the healthier you will be. Research shows that you can lower your blood pressure and heart rate and add years to your life by taking only 15 minutes a day to relax from a busy day.

So, if your life is super hectic, here are some tips on how to add some relaxation to it and to help you "stop and smell the roses" as a part of your daily routine:

  1. Do something that you love each day. Take time to listen to your favorite songs, write in a journal, garden, do a hobby, paint -- anything that brings joy and relaxation to your life.

  2. Take time to appreciate nature. Take a walk during your lunch hour or 10 minute break. While you are walking look – really look – at the trees, grass, flowers and the birds. You will be surprised at how relaxed you will be when you get back to the office or to your other responsibilities.

  3. Take 5 deep breaths. You can do this anywhere -- whether you are sitting in your chair at your office, or are at home or even at the grocery store. Once you start doing this, you will notice that you will relax more easily and will be happier.

  4. Get together with friends or family members. There is no better way to relax than being with people that share your interests, likes or dislikes. It could be friends that you haven't seen for a while or a distant cousin or even a grandmother or grandfather. Being joyful with family and friends is a wonderful way to relax!

  5. Take a nap. If possible, take some time to lie down for 15-20 minutes. You will be amazed at how refreshed you will feel when you wake up!

  6. Watch dogs at play! Even if you don't have a dog, go to a dog park. Sit down and watch the dogs play – you may be surprised at how relaxing it is to see them run and jump!

  7. Calgon, take me away! Do you remember that commercial? Remember how relaxed the actress was while having Calgon Bath Beads take her away to a soothingly relaxing place? You can do that too by taking a hot bath. And, why not add some bath gels with your favorite scents for added aromatherapy to it. Imagine you are in Tahiti...ahhhhh!

  8. Pet your dog or cat. Animals are one of the best ways to de-stress and relax. Petting a dog or cat is a very calming activity. And, they love it as well.

Even though your life can be overly stressful and hectic, remember to take time to stop and smell the roses for a healthier, longer life.

What do you do to relax? What does it include? Do you like to relax alone or with family and friends?
