Balanced Life Month: Top 10 Tips for the Sandwich Generation

It seems fitting that following the hustle and bustle of the holiday season January has been designated as National Balanced Life Month. It is an issue many people struggle with especially if they are a member of the Sandwich Generation. Balancing children, career and aging parents is stressful and exhausting.

What can you do to live a healthier lifestyle this year? Here are 10 suggestions:

1. Take a deep breath

It sounds simple but learning better breathing techniques can help improve everything from anxiety to headaches and blood pressure.

2. Pause to reflect.

What is it that is most important to you? What are you wasting time on that just won’t matter a month or year from now? Begin to rid yourself of those things that just aren’t that important in the long-run.

3. Learn to say “no.”

That is hard for many people to do, but it is especially necessary for busy caregivers of an aging loved one.

4. Kick perfectionist tendencies.

There are some occasions in life where perfection matters, but not many. Accept that “good enough” may have to do while you have so many roles in life to fill.

5. Disconnect after dinner.

Our overly connected world makes us accessible 24/7. That gives people no time to recharge and refresh. Except for your link to your family, disconnect after dinner. No texting or answering work emails!

6. Get some exercise.

It always seems counterintuitive to worn-out caregivers, but exercise is important to physical and mental health. A walk, a swim, yoga or Pilates can all help you feel stronger and healthier.

7. Eat your vegies.

A healthy diet is necessary to fuel your body for all you ask of it. Try to eat a minimum of five fruits and vegetables each day.

8. Ask for help.

Caregivers are often reluctant to ask for help or even accept it if it is offered. Allowing yourself to get run down and sick will only make things worse. Instead, consider services like respite or your church’s friendly visitor program to help with your aging loved one’s care.

9. Make time for laughter.

It is something of a cliché but it is the truth. Laughter is the best medicine. It acts as a stress buster and helps to improve mental and emotional well-being.

10. Keep a journal.

Even if you only take 5 or 10 minutes at bedtime, write down your thoughts, fears and worries from the day. Getting them out of your head and on to paper may help you figure out what to do or make it apparent the situation isn’t as bad as you thought. It can help make for a more peaceful night’s sleep.

Remember, a balanced life means caring for your mind, body and spirit. When you so, most things in life usually falls in to place.
