Interfaith Holiday Celebrations

Family-thanksgivingWhen your household is composed of different faiths, navigating the holidays can be a challenge. Everything from holiday decorations to menu planning can present opportunities for conflict. It is sometimes referred to as the “December dilemma.” Estimates suggest that about 45% of all U.S. households are interfaith.

Tips for Blending Religious Beliefs during the Holidays

If your family is struggling with these issues, these tips can help:

  1. Plan Ahead. One key to a successful holiday season is to plan ahead. Don’t wait until the last minute to decide how you will celebrate the holidays each year.
  2. Compromise. There are many ways to compromise so that your family can celebrate diversity while enjoying the holidays. It might mean expanding the holiday dinner to include foods and traditions each faith recognizes or attending several different religious services on the same day.
  3. Separate Celebrations. Having distinct and separate holiday celebrations gives you an opportunity to educate your children and other family members who might choose to join you on different religious traditions. It can be an educational experience, even if some have chosen a different faith.
  4. Share Your Decision. Let your extended family—especially your senior loved ones—know upfront how you have chosen to celebrate this season. Presenting a united front with your spouse can help you avoid being pressured into changing your mind by other family members who might not be happy with your choices.
  5. Don’t Pressure the Kids. Give your children the opportunity to participate in your celebrations without being forced to pick one over another. Don’t make them choose between parents or grandparents’ faiths.
  6. Develop Your Own Traditions. As your family grows, it will be important to develop your own traditions for the holidays. Blending two religions gives you the opportunity to do that in ways that respect and honor each.

We hope these tips can help your family find ways to enjoy the season together!
