jewish-summer-campIf you are the grandparent of a child who wants to go to summer camp this year, you might feel as if it is an uphill battle trying to convince them to attend a Jewish summer camp. The myths abound about these camps. We thought it might help to take time this week to separate the facts from the myths about Jewish summer camps.

Myth #1: Jewish summer camps are really expensive!

FACT: Just like music camp or dance camp or any other type of summer camp for kids, there are a variety of different price points. Some are budget conscious and offer discounts for multiple children from the same family, while others are the Rolls Royce of summer camps.

Myth #2: My grandkids want to have fun at camp not be bored by religion classes all day long

FACT: While religion is a component of Jewish summer camps, it is not an all-day focus. Ask to see a copy of the daily schedule and you just might be surprised by what you see on it! Most camps offer a variety of indoor and outdoor activities ranging from hiking and biking to music and crafts.

Myth #3: It’s hard to find a Jewish summer camp I can afford. There aren’t that many in my area and the ones that are here cost too much.

FACT: Finding a quality summer camp of any type takes some research. The Foundation for Jewish Camp has made finding a camp much easier. Their site has a database you can search based on what is important to you. You can select the geographic area you need, price, how many weeks you are interested in, camps for special needs and more. They also share information on scholarships and grant programs that are available to help finance summer camp.
